Our featured speaker at our annual chapter banquet will be Chip Syme, a retired locomotive

engineer from Minerva, Ohio.

Chip’s railroad career started in 1969, being hired by the Penn Central just prior to his high

school graduation, continuing with Conrail and finishing with the Norfolk Southern.

One of his early assignments was working the cluster of branch lines out of Minerva, Ohio.

During his career, Chip also worked out of Canton and Crestline Ohio, as well as Conway,

Pennsylvania.

Chip was also a qualified engineer from Conway to Altoona, Pennsylvania and Conway to Ft

Wayne, Indiana. He was also qualified to operate on all of the branch lines in the Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania area.

Chip finished his railroad career on October 29, 2009, working as an engineer on Norfolk

Southern mail trains between Toledo, Ohio and Conway.

Through his slides and stories, Chip will describe to us what he saw working various trains

and helper assignments during his Penn Central and Conrail years. Images of Conrail’s

“Office Car Special”, wrecks, odd equipment, as well as various scenes along the right of way

will sure to be entertaining to all.

New York Central F-7A unit at

Collinwood yard in July 1979.
